John Goldman (1938 – 2013) was a renowned haematologist and a pioneer in the treatment of leukaemia. His charity, Leuka, has created a fellowship programme aimed at those with a passion for science and a desire to translate scientific advances into clinical practice. Leuka is pleased to invite applications for the first of its John Goldman Fellowships for Future Science awards.
  • Applications are invited from scientists and clinician-scientists working in UK universities/hospitals. There is no age limit, although the fellowship programme is designed to provide an opportunity for talented early career scientists to develop as independent investigators. Eligibility

  • Relevant, high quality and feasible applications are invited from scientists and clinicianscientists from across the UK. There is no specific age limit, although the awards are designed to provide an opportunity for talented early career scientists to develop as independent investigators. Awards are open to researchers (who may or may not be medically qualified) who are generally expected to have up to five years post-doctoral experience. Applicants will have a publication record but it does not need to be exceptional at this stage. The crucial factor is the ability to demonstrate genuine potential.

  • Providing an exceptional individual with personal support to enhance their work within their own research institution.
  • Enabling an exceptional more senior individual to employ a clinical or non-clinical Fellow to support them on a pioneering project.

Grants

  • Grants are for up to £100k maximum, to span a 1-2 year period, as required. Potential to utilise the grant to leverage additional or matched funding will be viewed favourably, but is not essential. The grant may be used for salary and direct costs of the project but it will not support indirect costs such as institutional overheads.
  • The initial application should provide indicative financial information as to how the award will be utilised, corroborated by the relevant finance department. Shortlisted applicants may be asked to provide a more detailed financial breakdown, in line with the terms and conditions of the fellowship grant.

A highly motivated PhD student who is enthusiastic about working in an inter-disciplinary environment. The studentship is a part of a research consortium that aims at integrating evolutionary genetics, ecological modelling and environmental sociology to understand the external drivers of life history changes in a heavily fished Atlantic salmon population complex and to advance sustainable use of these aquatic natural resources. This project has been recently funded as a part of the Finnish Academy Arctic Research program.

University of Turku - the campus that never sleeps

  • The Teno River, located in northernmost Europe, supports one of the largest and most biodiverse naturally reproducing stocks of Atlantic salmon in the world. The Teno salmon monitoring programme, that has been running for 40+ years and involves close co-operation between scientific research and local fishers, provides multiple sources of data for this project. In addition to long-term catch data, it includes an archive of over 100,000 scale samples, containing information on, for example, life history strategies and growth rates of the Teno salmon across four decades. These samples also provide a source of DNA for genetic monitoring and linking genotype and phenotype.
Statistical inference in the project will focus on several particularly intensively monitored populations within the Teno population complex, and aim at broadening the understanding of the overall population dynamics of Teno salmon. Genomic research will focus on understanding the genetic basis of life history traits studied in the ecological modelling component e.g. age-at-maturity and repeat spawning.
  • The PhD student is expected to contribute both to the genomic and ecological data analyses, and therefore enthusiasm for, and experience with, population genetics and/or ecological modelling is desired. A strong background in mathematics, (Bayesian) statistics, bioinformatics or genomics is an advantage. Depending on the interests of the student, there are possibilities to work in the genetics lab and/or participate in fieldwork on the Teno River.

UCLA Research Center to Focus on Healthcare Big Data Analytics

Researchers and faculty at UCLA will be diving into big data analytics at the newly formed Institute for Quantitative and Computational Biosciences (QCBio), a multi-disciplinary collaboration that hopes to foster personalized medicine.  Headed by Alexander Hoffmann, a professor of genetics, immunology, and microbiology, the Institute will attempt to answer pressing questions about the impact of genetics and other biological factors on the development and treatment of cancer, infectious disease, and additional conditions.

Data science and biology have never really mixed well. And in retrospect, it’s pretty understandable why. Biology and medicine have their own lingua franca, which makes for a pretty steep learning curve. People who thrive at this intersection not only have to be in tune with the fundamentals of biochemistry and genetics, but also need to be mathematically adept and strong algorithmic thinkers.
  • For decades, we’ve gotten away with computer scientists sticking with computers and biologists sticking with genetics. But things are rapidly changing, and there’s a growing need for people who can bring a data-driven approach to medicine. The advent of modern high-throughput biotechnology has brought upon a data deluge that has completely changed the field’s landscape. For example, a binary alignment file for a single human genome could easily amount to hundreds of gigabytes or terabytes of raw data. More Rotavirus Vaccination Means Less Rotavirus

The more children who are vaccinated againstrotavirus at your pediatrician’s office, the less likely it is that your child will be exposed to the gastrointestinal illness, a new studyhas concluded. That might sound like a no-brainer, but with vaccine coverage as low as 0%* at some practices included in this study, these findings have significant implications for children unable to be vaccinated against rotavirus.
  • Kids were more than three times more likely to have rotavirus if they were patients at a location where less than 40% of other patients received at least one dose of the rotavirus vaccine (compared to locations with at least 80% coverage).

New Tick-Borne 'Bourbon Virus'

Researchers have identified the cause of a Kansas farmer's mysterious death this summer as Bourbon virus.
Thought to be transmitted by ticks, the virus "was fast-moving and severe, causing lung and kidney failure, and shock," The New York Times reported, killing the previously healthy man after only 10 days in the hospital.
  • Bourbon virus, named after Bourbon County, Kansas, where the only known patient lived, is similar to viruses seen previously in Eastern Europe, Africa and Asia, said Hawkinson, but nothing like it had ever been identified in the Western Hemisphere before.

The Impact of Spatial Structure on Viral Genomic Diversity

Most clinical and natural microbial communities live and evolve in spatially structured environments. When changes in environmental conditions trigger evolutionary responses, spatial structure can impact the types of adaptive response and the extent to which they spread.
  • In particular, localized competition in a spatial landscape can lead to the emergence of a larger number of different adaptive trajectories than would be found in well-mixed populations. Our goal was to determine how two levels of spatial structure affect genomic diversity in a population and how this diversity is manifested spatially.

Epilepsy Research Benefits from the Crowd

For millions of people with epilepsy, life comes with too many restrictions. If they just had a reliable way to predict when their next seizure will come, they could have a chance at leading more independent and productive lives.
  • That’s why it is so encouraging to hear that researchers have developed a new algorithm that can predict the onset of a seizure correctly 82 percent of the time. Until recently, the best algorithm was hardly better than flipping a coin, leading some to speculate that seizures are random neurological events that can’t be predicted at all. But the latest leap forward shows that seizures certainly can be predicted, and our research efforts are headed in the right direction to make them even more predictable. The other big news is how this new algorithm was developed: it’s the product of a crowdsourcing competition.

Overview

  • The Dana-Farber Cancer Institute seeks an Bioinformatics Analyst to perform analysis of new datasets generated in the context of clinically oriented cancer sequencing projects that advance efforts for precision (or “personalized”) cancer medicine.  The successful candidate will develop and support data processing and analysis tools, maintain datasets and databases, integrate tools and databases into existing high-throughput pipelines, and facilitate the display and the distribution of processed data.

These projects may include:

  • Prospective clinical sequencing to guide the care of cancer patients
  • Studies of resistance to targeted therapies and extraordinary responses
  • Studies of patient samples for tumor behavior and clinical outcomes
These projects involve collaborative efforts between Boston Children’s Hospital, the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, and the Broad Institute.  The goals of these initiatives consist of analyzing sequencing data to determine the effects of genomic alterations and expression changes on clinical behavior, both retrospectively and prospectively.  The new data that emerge from these efforts could help identify novel approaches for genomics-driven care in oncology.  In addition, this data may provide support for new methods in clinical decision-making, biomarkers for rational drug development, and new insights into tumor biology through innovative analyses.
  • The analyst will join a dynamic and multidisciplinary team of clinical and translational investigators. He/she will participate in the design and implementation of algorithms to analyze the data and integrate with other data sets including clinical outcomes data; work with faculty and staff computational biologists to develop the tools needed for manipulating and preparing data for display; coordinate the transfer of raw and analyzed data to external collaborators and data repositories; and help maintain, support, and document shared tools, code base, and data sets. As the software infrastructure evolves, this position will present diverse and flexible opportunities - from deeper and more complex software design problems, to becoming more involved in the bioinformatics and analytical aspects of predictive modeling.
  • Requirements:  A B.S. or M.S. in bioinformatics, mathematical, physical, or computer science, or comparable research experience, together with significant experience in computer programming and computational biological applications. A strong background in statistics and biology is preferred. Experience managing and curating large datasets and with machine learning techniques is desired. GPCRs heterodimerization appears to play a role in modulating agonist/antagonist affinity, efficacy and/or trafficking properties, the molecular models of GPCRs required to understand receptor function must consider these oligomerization hypotheses. To advance knowledge in this field, we would like to investigate the role of heterodimer GPCRs receptor inside the lipid-bilayer and also we would like to study GPCRs-ligand interactions through computational approach. 2015 is a special year for the Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research (HZI) in Braunschweig:turning 50! In October 1965 the first laboratories took up work on the campus were the HZI is now located.
Since the beginnings a lot has changed. Founded as the Institute of Molecular Biology, Biochemistry and Biophysics (IMB), the Federal Republic of Germany became the main stakeholder of the institute in 1975 which was then renamed as German Research Centre for Biotechnology mbH (GBF) in 1976. Since then the GBF was a member of the Association of National Research Centers (AGF), which later became the Helmholtz Association. Area of research

  • The Helmholtz department “Regulation in Infection Biology” studies molecular and cellular mechanisms of regulation in processes of infection and immunity in Gram-positive bacterial pathogens. The group has recently focused on mechanisms involving Clp-mediated protein quality control, toxin-antitoxins systems and RNAregulatory elements.

Aim of the Fellowship

  • The scheme is conceptualized with the aim of attracting highly skilled researchers (Indian nationals) working overseas in various cutting edge disciplines of biotechnology (agriculture,health sciences, bio-engineering, energy, environment, bioinformatics and other related areas),by providing them an attractive avenue to pursue their R&D interests in Indian institutions.

Who is eligible to apply ?

  • The applicant should possess a Ph.D., M.D., M. Tech, M.VSc. or equivalent degree with an outstanding track record as reflected in publications and other recognitions and with at least three years of post-doctoral research experience of which last two years should be from an overseas laboratory. Only candidates (Indian nationals) working overseas are eligible to apply.
  • Those who have already returned to India within one year of the closing date of this advertisement are also eligible.

Incentives of being a Ramalingaswami fellow

  • This is a senior fellowship programme, and awardees are to be considered synonymous to the faculty/scientists at the level of Scientist-D. They are entitled to take up teaching/research assignments and supervising Doctoral/MS students.
  • The scheme provides a consolidated monthly remuneration of Rs. 85,000/- p.m. In addition, a House Rent Allowance of Rs. 7,500/- p.m. is given to fellows. In case host institute provides accommodation to the fellow, no house rent allowance is admissible.
  • Fellows will receive a research/contingency grant of Rs. 10.00 lakhs for the 1st year; Rs. 7.50 lakhs for the 2nd year; Rs. 5.00 lakhs for subsequent 3 years for purchase of consumables, minor equipment, international and domestic travel, engaging manpower and other contingent expenditure to be incurred for the implementation of research proposal.
  • DBT encourages host institutions to provide medical benefits, transport allowance, leave travel allowance and other benefits as per their prevailing norms as applicable to their employees of the rank equivalent to Scientist D out of their own resources/ funds.

Bioinformatics Research Associate
You will work within two laboratories that are part of an internationally recognised, high quality, multidisciplinary program that investigates several diverse aspects of eukaryotic gene expression. A number of projects in labs will be supported which use the latest genomics technologies, including ChIP-seq and RNA-seq, to study how cellular signaling affects transcription factor function and chromatin structure on a genome-wide scale.
