Bioinformatician - Junior Project Leader

East Malling Research (EMR) is an independent provider of top-class research, development and consultancy serving the food chain, with particular emphasis on perennial horticultural crops and their interactions with the environment. EMR’s team of scientists integrate their knowledge of breeding and molecular genetics, genomics, post and disease biology and management, crop and post-harvest physiology, agronomy, environmental science, food product development and consumer research, to address both strategic and industry issues.

Bioinformatician – Junior Project Leader

EMR aims to be recognised as the pre-eminent research institution in the UK for strategic and applied research, development and innovation in horticulture. EMR carries out research in perennial crop species and their pests and pathogens. Building on our significant international reputation, we wish to appoint an innovative, motivated and enthusiastic bioinformatician to contribute to multidisciplinary research into plant, pathogen and arthropod systems.

The appointee will join the Genetics and Crop Improvement Programme; one of three research programmes within EMR. In the programme there is a strong emphasis on using sequencing approaches to understand the genetic basis of complex traits and transcriptomic approaches to understand the regulation of genes important in plant improvement, including host disease resistance.

The successful applicant will initially work on a five year BBSRC-funded project to elucidate the genetic basis of disease resistance to the oomycete pathogens Phytophthora cactorum and Phytophthora fragariae in the octopoloid strawberry Fragaria x ananassa. This work will include:

• Using genotyping-by-sequencing approaches in diploid (and later octoploid) strawberry
• Analysis of RNA-seq transcriptome timecourse data
• Building effector identification pipelines for multiple pathogen isolates
• Draft genome assembly of complex polyploid genomes using single molecule sequencing

The successful candidate will develop national and international collaborations in genomics and bioinformatics research and, in time, prepare grant proposals at appropriate levels to attract research funding. Publications in high impact journals will be expected and an ability to communicate and present to both scientific and industry audiences is essential.

The minimum requirement for this post is a PhD in bioinformatics, population genetics or another computational discipline, with additional experience in biology/informatics.

The appointment is expected to be in Pay Band 6, £26,047 – 29,031 with salary dependent on experience and relevant qualifications. 25 days annual leave plus 8 days public holidays, pleasant working environment and eligibility to join the USS pension scheme upon appointment.

Further details and an application form can be obtained from the EMR website, www.emr.co.uk, or by e-mail from [email protected]. Please include a detailed CV with your application. Closing date: Tuesday 25 June 2013. Interviews to be held 10 July 2013.
