PhD @ the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland

An exciting opportunity for a PhD student has arisen in the areas of population genetics. This is a structured four-year PhD project, supported by Science Foundation Ireland.
The aim of the project is to describe human genetic diversity in the Irish population, and in doing so, outline fine-scale population structure across the island. The project will have strong links to genetic mapping of disease genes, as understanding fine-scale patterns of diversity in a population can inform on study design. The project will involve fieldwork across Ireland, laboratory work in a well-resourced and supportive environment and opportunities for training in the generation, manipulation and analysis of next-generation sequence datasets.

This Is RCSI

Research will be carried out between the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland and University College Dublin, under the supervision of Dr. Gianpiero Cavalleri and Dr. Sean Ennis. This is a four-year project starting during the 4th quarter of 2014 or earlier. Aside from your project work, your development will be further supported via the structured PhD programme at RCSI which offers a variety of generic training opportunities. Fees will be covered in full (for EU students) and you will receive a stipend of EU18,000 per annum.

The successful candidate will:

  • Have a minimum of an upper second-class honours Undergraduate degree in genetics, bioinformatics, computer science, statistics or related undergraduate science degree.
  • Experience in LINUX and/or R computational environments is desirable but not essential.
  • Be highly motivated and have the initiative to work independently when required.
  • Have strong communication and organisational skills.
Any questions related to this post should be directed to Dr. Gianpiero Cavalleri ([email protected]).
Candidates should, referencing position PhD-structure, email a CV and cover letter outlining their suitability for the position to: Gillian Murphy at [email protected].
The closing date for applications is Friday 10th October 2014.
