The Medical Sciences IT Software Engineering team is tasked with applying industry best practices to the design, development, and deployment of internal and third party software products. We are looking to hire individuals with deep experience with bioinformatics software development and integration in an enterprise setting, and who can help us solve the next wave of technical challenges using the latest cloud-based, big-data, and rich analytics tool sets. You should be versed and comfortable spanning the full development lifecycle, from requirements identification and prototyping, through design and implementation, to customer acceptance and delivery. Essential Functions:

  • Design, develop, test, deploy, administrate, and maintain database, data transformation, data visualization, reporting, and medical information systems and platforms
  • Collaborate with scientists in the business to understand requirements and develop data analysis strategies and plans to meet them.
  • Implement bioinformatics data integration and analysis pipelines using tools such as Pipeline Pilot and/or scripting languages.
  • Develop visualization environments in reporting tools to enable scientists to explore the data and answer questions.
  • Written and verbal presentation of results and methods.
  • Responsible for initial design and development of new software and/or extensive software revisions.
  • Define technical requirements and create high-level architectural specifications, ensuring feasibility, functionality, and integration with existing systems/platforms
  • Represent the team in cross-organizational development forums as well as customer requirements gathering and software validation and training sessions
  • Rely on extensive experience and judgment to understand complex problems and resolve them efficiently, Use prior knowledge and experience to provide functional and technical support and leadership to colleagues
  • Participate in training and orienting new software engineers as they join the team

Minimum Qualifications (must have)

  1. Excited about building world-class software solutions leverage genomic data in order to cure cancer
  2. Exposure to the fields of genomics, experimental data processing, high-throughput data analysis, and genomic databases.
  3. Firm grasp of univariate statistical analysis fundamentals necessary. Experience with multivariate statistics or statistical modeling a plus.
  4. Strong computational skills, particularly in data parsing, cleansing, data modeling, analysis, and database design and implementation.
  5. Solid knowledge of unix/linux. Experience with cluster computing a plus.
  6. Ability to review, synthesize, and present scientific data and methods.
  7. Outstanding written and verbal communication skills.
  8. Previous bioinformatics and scientific programming experience
  9. Deep understanding of object oriented design and programming
  10. Expert in developing multi-tier, scalable, and browser based applications. Cloud-based applications leveraging AWS is highly preferred.
  11. 3+ years of solid hands experience with Java (primary language). Other languages (C++, Ruby, Python, etc. will be considered)
  12. Prior exposure to scripting languages (e.g. Perl, Bash) on Linux or Unix(DTSTTCPW, YAGNI, refactor ruthlessly)

  • Experience with Spotfire, Pipeline Pilot, R, SQL, and NGS
  • Scientific experience in cancer study and/or research a plus.
  • Experience working in an FDA regulated environment
  • Experience in natural language processing
  • Experience interacting with semantic web ontologies (OWL, RDF)
  • A healthy sense of humor and appreciation for quirky and geeky antics around the office
