Role Description

The Oncology and West Coast Research Business Technology group is seeking a Laboratory Automation and Bioinformatics expert. The individual will have computer science and programming skills as well as scientific knowledge. The person will work on projects spanning laboratory automation, the creation of ad-hoc small tools and utilities, and the extraction, integration and analysis of data using APIs and tools such as Pipeline Pilot and Spotfire. Furthermore, this individual will support the research and development organization to refine and deploy novel algorithm or visualizations to a broader audience.
The individual will also have the competence to deploy, support and train people in the use of R&D applications as needed.


  • Delivers technical solutions in a timely fashion.
  • Collaborates with business partners, analysts, and end-users to define solution requirements.
  • Identify and evaluate new technologies for implementation.
  • Initiate and prototype new solutions.
  • Provides services to Research Units that enable and support scientific workflows, lab automation, regulatory
  • compliance, data management and data analysis.
  • Contributes to and maintains an enterprise systems architecture and information architecture to maximize the
  • value of technology and information investments.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentoring to others in areas of acquired expertise.


  • Degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or similar technology.
  • Complementary degree/major in Biology or Bioinformatics is a strong plus.
  • Minimum of 2 years of work experience.

Technical Skill Requirements

  • Excellent communication skills
  • Comfortable working in a team environment
  • Solid background in at least one scripting language: (e.g., PHP, Python, or Perl) or object-oriented programming language (e.g. Java or C#)

  • An ability to develop Web-based UIs (using e.g. JavaScript, HTML5, or Flex) that interact with relational databases models such as Oracle or MySQL.

  • Understanding in cutting edge technologies such as non-relational data systems (Hadoop, MongoDB, etc.) and in cloud(or SaaS) computing

  • Experience with other software environments  such as Spotfire ,SAS, and/or other data mining software Proficient in Windows and Linux environments

  • Excel macro development, including Visual Basic experience a plus R or Matlab statistical language experience a plus

    SQL and Pipeline Pilot experience a plus
