Applications have opened for the inaugural EMBL Australia PhD Course, which will bring together up to 60 high-achieving first and second year PhD students for a two-week residential program at the University of Melbourne from 30th June - 12th July 2013.Broaden your horizons.See how your PhD fits into the bigger world of science. Get a taste for a range of fields: bioinformatics, developmental biology, genomics, systems biology, regenerative medicine and more. Think about how developments in another field of science can impact your own research direction.  Learn from experts in the field.Hear about bioinformatics from WEHI’s Terry Speed, biomedical imaging from Monash's Gary Egan, and regenerative medicine from EMBL Australia’s scientific head Nadia Rosenthal. Chat with scientists from leading Australian universities and research institutes, as well as from the EMBL. It’s a great opportunity to make connections.  Build your scientific toolkit.Gain insight into cutting edge new technologies and techniques in molecular biology. Get to know the resources available to you in your career as a researcher – visit the Synchrotron, see the latest tools for imaging and get an introduction to the latest tools for genomic analysis.Our program is modelled on the annual pre-doc training course which is compulsory for first year PhD students at EMBL – the European Molecular Biology Laboratory.  “The EMBL course is a fantastic way to find out about the current trends in molecular biology,” says Australian student Simone Li, who has just completed the EMBL pre-doc course as part of her PhD studies at EMBL. “From super resolution microscopy to molecular medicine and metagenomics—the course introduced me to fields I would not otherwise have known about!”Applications are now open: apply using our online form.

Program highlights


  • In depth workshops on developmental biology and regenerative medicine led by internationally renowned scientists, Professor Nadia Rosenthal (EMBL Australia, Australian Regenerative Medicine Institute), and Dr Edwina McGlinn, (EMBL Australia, Australian Regenerative Medicine Institute). 
  • The latest in genomics (Dr Vladimir Benes, EMBL Heidelberg), phenomics, RNA biology (Professor Thomas Preiss, Australian National University), and structural biology (Dr Matthias Wilmanns, EMBL Hamburg).
  • Up-to-date discussions on topics including neuroscience, systems biology and obesity research.
  • Bioinformatics workshops with leading bioinformaticians, including Professor Terry Speed (WEHI).
  • Imaging workshops with Professor Gary Egan (Monash Biomedical Imaging).
