Newton Bhabha PhD Placement Programme 2016-17

On behalf of the Department of Business, Innovation and Skills, UK and the Ministry of Science and Technology, India, British Council- India and the Department of Biotechnology, India are pleased to invite applications for funding to support short-term PhD placements between the UK and Indian institutions.
The programme will sponsor UK and Indian PhD students to spend a period of their study (3 to 6 months) in Indian and UK higher education institutions taking place between April to December 2016. This scholar centered programme offers PhD students an opportunity for international exchange and enable them to learn valuable new skills or techniques, access facilities or resources not readily available in their home country and build relationships with potential new collaborators, including industry partners where relevant.

The programme is envisaged to: 

  • Develop individual capacity through international training and development opportunities.
  • Increase the number of highly trained researchers in the UK and India with international experience, able to contribute to the absorptive capacity for research and innovation and thus bring about economic and social benefits.
  • Build cultural understanding, and foster long-term sustainable research collaborations.
  • Increase awareness of the research strengths of the UK and India.

Key Dates

  • Deadline for receipt of applications: 7 December 2015
  • Selection results announced by 15 February 2016
  • Placements to take place between April 2016 to December 2016

Eligibility

Applications are invited from PhD students in the UK currently enrolled at a regionally accredited institution of higher education institute in the UK. In India, the application is open to PhD scholars who have qualified any National level test and pursuing PhD in Biological and interface Sciences. Application

The application should be submitted by PhD student with endorsement from both the sending and receiving supervisors with the latter’s confirmation that they will host the PhD students; duration of the stay and level of bench fees they will charge.
