The MRC-PHE Centre for Environment and Health is an internationally recognised centre of excellence for leading cutting edge multidisciplinary research. A key component of our Centre’s strategic aim and mission is to train and develop the next generation of research and policy leaders in the environment and health arena. Successful candidates will be supported by the MRC-PHE Centre for Environment and Health’s training programme structure and will be provided with a programme of bespoke research training.

The MRC-PHE Centre for Environment and Health is delighted to welcome applications for our PhD studentships to start October 2015. The studentships will be based at the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics and National Heart and Lung Institute at Imperial College, and/or Analytical and Environmental Sciences Division at King’s College London.

Possible research areas for studentships

  • Environmental exposure, biomarkers/omics and causes of asthma, allergy and respiratory diseases; cardiovascular diseases; and cancer
  • Biomarkers, ‘omics’ and statistical modeling of health outcomes: risk prediction and early detection of diseases
  • Air pollution and health
  • Noise pollution and health
  • Systems medicine, computational biology and bioinformatics
  • Genomic and mechanistic toxicology
  • Biostatistics, data science, and mathematical modelling

Studentship stipend and eligibility

Academic eligibility

  • Applicants should have, or expect to receive, a first or upper second class degree or equivalent in a relevant quantitative science or life science subject such as biology, genetics, biochemistry, medicine, biomedical sciences, chemistry, economics, mathematics, geography, physics, statistics etc.
Applicants are not expected to have confirmed a PhD supervisor or title before application, but a clear idea of the area you wish to pursue will be beneficial for your personal statement. The list of key areas above is not exhaustive and we welcome suggestions for possible projects from applicants if you have a project in mind.

  • The personal statement should not be longer than 1 A4 page using Arial 11 font and should include why you are applying for a Centre studentship, the area of research you wish to focus on and why you believe that research in this area is important.
