The Samples, Phenotypes, Ontology Team (SPOT) seeks a highly motivated Bioinformatician/ Software Developer to join the Mouse Informatics Project at the European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI) which is located on the Wellcome Trust Genome Campus near Cambridge in the UK.
We are looking for an enthusiastic bioinformatican or software engineer to build and deploy services needed by our International Mouse Phenotyping Consortium (IMPC) partners. Responsibilities will include maintenance and refinement of our statistical analysis pipeline, database programming, and improvements to the mousephenotype.org portal. Some national and international travel will be required.

Our team provides informatics support for a number of major mouse knockout and phenotyping resources including the analysis, archiving and dissemination of new phenotype data for 1000's of knockout mouse strains generated by the IMPC, and tracking the production and characterisation of mutant mouse strains by the European EUCOMMTOOLS consortium.
The team has expertise in Java, R, and technologies such as SOLR and this represents a chance to work within an agile team on compelling scientific problems. The post-holder is expected to complement our team by contributing a unique skill set while learning from other team members.
The candidate will interact closely with other members of the SPOT team and work towards shared deadlines. Therefore it is essential that the candidate possess a strong commitment to team environment dynamics while also being able to work independently.
The candidate will report directly the Mouse Informatics Project Leader and will be expected to participate and occasionally report on their work at twice a month SPOT meetings.

Qualifications and Experience
The ideal candidate will hold a M.Sc. in Computer Science or Bioinformatics.
Experience of working in a production software environment and organising tasks to fit defined release cycles is desirable. (S)he will have experience in web programming from graphical user interfaces to relational databases. The post-holder must also have experience of working in a UNIX/Linux environment and proficiency in Java, one or more web technologies (JSP, JavaScript, PHP), and relational databases (e.g. MySQL) Candidates with bioinformatics experience are welcomed, experience with R would be useful.
The incumbent will be self-motivated and capable of working both independently and within a closely interacting team of scientists in an international academic environment. (S)he should be comfortable with detail-orientated work, project deadlines, and the challenges and excitement associated with working in a fast moving field. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are essential to be part of a cohesive and effective team that address the challenges of international bioinformatics collaborations.
