Announcing the Bioinformatics SIB Awards 2015

The SIB Swiss Institute of Bioinformatics is happy to announce the SIB Awards 2015. These awards consist of three categories:

Key dates:

  • Call for entries: 15 October 2014
  • Closing date for entries: 31 January 2015
  • Awards presentation: 8-10 June 2015 at the [BC]2 Conference in Basel

#1:SIB International Young Bioinformatician Award 2015

This award recognizes the excellent and promising young career of a scientist, or a project he/she has carried out, or a paper he/she has published in the field of bioinformatics or computational biology.
General Conditions

1. Terms and Conditions

  • The award is open worldwide to a young researcher (graduate student or having finished his/her PhD within the last six years preceding the closing date for applications set out in article 7), who has carried out outstanding research centred on bioinformatics or computational biology (hereinafter “the Candidate”).

2. Application requirements

Applications may be submitted by:
  • Any professor working in the field of bioinformatics or computational biology;
  • The Candidate;
(hereinafter “the Applicant”).
Applications must include the following mandatory components:
  • Documentation supporting the application (accepted publication, or two to five page summary of the project/career);
  • For applications submitted by the candidate: a letter of support of the project/PhD supervisor, Head of Department or equivalent;
  • A CV including list of publications.
Applications can include the following optional component:
  • PhD or Master thesis.

All application materials must be submitted in English. Documents must be submitted in PDF format only and the maximum size of the files is 2MB.

3. Selection Criteria

  • The jury will base its selection criteria solely on the scientific excellence of the Candidate.

4. Exclusion Criteria

  • SIB will exclude applications that contradict the present General Conditions.

5. Jury

  • An international jury of high-ranked experts will review the applications and designate the award laureate (hereinafter “the Laureate”). The jury is autonomous and can decide not to attribute the Award. The jury’s decisions are final and without appeal.

6. Award

  • The Laureate will be announced during the 12th [BC]2 Conference in Basel, Switzerland, on 8-10 June 2015 (hereinafter “the [BC]2 Conference”) and is therefore expected to attend the [BC]2 Conference.
  • The Award carries a cash prize of CHF 10,000, an award certificate, and travel expenses for the Laureate to attend the [BC]2 Conference. The usage of the prize money is unconditional.
  • The Laureate will be invited to give a plenary talk during the [BC]2 Conference.

7. Timeline and Closing Date for Applications

  • Call for entries: 15 October 2014
  • Closing date for entries: 31 January 2015
  • Awards presentation: 8-10 June 2015

#2:SIB International Bioinformatics Resource Award 2015

This award recognizes a bioinformatics resource (database, infrastructure, code-base, analysis framework, visualization tool, etc.) that is breaking new ground conceptually and/or technically.

General Conditions

1. Terms and Conditions

This Award recognizes a bioinformatics resource (database, infrastructure, code-base, analysis framework, visualization tool, etc.) that is breaking new ground conceptually and/or technically (hereinafter “the Resource”).
The Award is open worldwide to any new bioinformatics resource or any very major new release of a resource
  • that is available online and
  • that has been formally published for the first time within five years preceding the closing date for applications set out in article 7.

2. Application requirements

Applications may be submitted by:
  • any professor (user of the resource) or
  • the Principal Investigator of the resource or
  • a team member of the resource
(hereinafter “the Applicant”). 
Applications must include the following mandatory components:
  • publication on the resource;
  • two to five-page summary describing the resource and its scientific impact, and containing a short, forward-looking statement on how the resource can be maintained over the coming years;
  • the name and contact details of the Principal Investigator of the resource.

All application materials must be submitted in English. Documents must be submitted in PDF format only and the maximum size is 2MB.

3. Selection Criteria


  • The resource should have an important impact on the life science community, or show the clear potential to have such an impact.

4. Exclusion Criteria


  • SIB will exclude applications that contradict the present General Conditions.

5. Jury

  • An international jury of high-ranked experts will review the applications and designate the winning resource (hereinafter “the Laureate”). The jury is autonomous and can decide not to attribute the award. The jury’s decisions are final and without appeal.

6. Award

  • The Laureate will be announced during the 12th [BC]2 Conference in Basel, Switzerland, on 8-10 June 2015 (hereinafter “the [BC]2 Conference”). The Principal Investigator of the resource or one team member designated by the Principal Investigator (hereinafter “the Team Member”) is therefore expected to attend the [BC]2 Conference.
  • The award carries a cash prize of CHF 10,000, an award certificate and travel expenses for the Team Member to attend the [BC]2 Conference. The cash prize is given to the Principal Investigator but is meant to support the entire team behind the bioinformatics resource; it should be used for the benefit and further development of the resource.
  • The Team Member of the resource will be invited to present the resource and its scientific background during the conference.

  • Call for entries: 15 October 2014
  • Closing date for entries: 31 January 2015
  • Awards presentation: 8-10 June 2015
