PhD program in Bioinformatics @ Swiss Institute of Bioinformatics / University of Geneva Medical School.

swiss instote bioinfo
We are looking for highly motivated candidates to lead computational analyses of metagenomic sequencing of human clinical samples in close collaboration with Geneva University Hospital. The project will be supervised by Prof. Zdobnov heading the Computational Evolutionary Genomics group at the Department of Genetic Medicine and Development of the University of Geneva Medical School and the renowned Swiss Institute of Bioinformatics, offering a stimulating research environment with excellent facilities.
  • Studies of human microbiomes, i.e. viruses, bacteria, fungi living in and on us, promise a direct impact on medicine. These microbes make up our most intimate environments that directly impact our health by causing diseases or reflect on our physiology, allowing to monitor our health state. By reading all theDNA/RNA extracted directly from the clinical samples, we are revolutionizing the understanding of our connection to this microbial complexity. Now, as modern sequencing technologies make this quantitative molecular assessment of microbiomes readily available, it will be your chance to learn about the emerging appreciation of the microbiome's role in human health and bringing bioinformatics to the clinical practice.
The candidates should have a strong background in bioinformatics, including programming skills, and a good understanding of molecular biology and evolution. A Diploma or MSc degree in Bioinformatics or Biology, practical experience in the Unix environment, and fluency in English are required for both positions. The postdoctoral candidate should have a PhD with experience in the computational genomics. Knowledge of microbiology, and particularly virology, is a strong plus.
