Open Position: PhD position at the interface of epigenetics and stroke research
We are looking for a highly motivated PhD student with keen interest in applied epigenetics and excellent communication skills in English. Ideally, applicants have a Masters degree or equivalent in Biochemistry or Cell Biology.
Furthermore, a track record in Bioinformatics is of advantage.

LMU Munchen - Munich University

In a project funded as part of the new DFG Excellence Research Network “, Munich Cluster for Systems Neurology (SyNergy)” the Adolf-Butenandt-Institute for Physiological Chemistry (www.ladurnerlab.de), led by Prof. Dr. Andreas Ladurner, and the Institute for Stroke and Dementia Research (www.isd-muc.de), led by Prof. Dr. Martin Dichgans, plan to study the role of the stroke-relevant HDAC9 locus in gene regulation and protein acetylation. The aim of the project will be to identify the roles of HDAC9 in regulating gene activity in the mouse using functional genomics.
  • The Adolf-Butenandt-Institute for Physiological Chemistry is interested in the epigenetics of metabolic and environmental adaptation, and has particular expertise in chromatin plasticity using structural, cell biological and genomic approaches. The ISD is a new research institute bridging the traditional barriers between academic medicine and basic science. A major research field is to characterize risk loci associated with stroke and dementia in a genome-wide scale and to address their function with cell biological and genomic approaches.
This PhD position will be in an international, dynamic and “open-door” atmosphere, with access to state of the art laboratory facilities and structured training as part of the Graduate School for Systemic Neuroscience (GSN) (www.gsn.unimuenchen). Salary is according to the German TV-L scale. The position is initially limited for one year, but subject to a satisfactory first year PhD assessment, is expected to be extended until completion of the doctoral dissertation. Disabled persons will be preferentially considered in case of equal qualifications.
To find out more about the project, please send a cover letter, Motivation Letter, CV and two Letters of Recommendation as a merged PDF file to Prof. Dr. Andreas Ladurner at ([email protected]) and Prof. Dr. Martin Dichgans at ([email protected]).
