PhD position in Molecular Biology

The Department of Molecular Biology, which is part of both the Faculty of Science and Technology and the Faculty of Medicine, has about 200 employees. The department’s main tasks are research, postgraduate and undergraduate education and interaction with society. For more information, www.molbiol.umu.se
The project will be part of MIMS (www.mims.umu.se), which is the Swedish node in the Nordic EMBL partnership in Molecular Medicine and hosted with the multidisciplinary Umeå Centre for Microbial Research (UCMR, www.ucmr.umu.se).

This is Umeå University!

  • Umeå University is dedicated to providing creative environments for learning and work. We offer a wide variety of courses and programmes, world leading research, and excellent innovation and collaboration opportunities. More than 4 300 employees and more than 32 400 students have already chosen Umeå University. We welcome your application!

Molecular mechanisms involved in persistent bacterial infections

  • Persistent infections by bacteria are a major cause of antibiotic overuse in animals and humans and increasing evidence indicate that development of antibiotic resistance is promoted during persistency. This thesis project aims to reveal mechanisms involved in establishment of persistent infections. The ultimate goal is to identify new bacterial targets that can be explored for development of new antibiotics. The studies will focus on bacterial stress responses using the enteropathogen Yersinia pseudotuberculosis as a model pathogen. The work involves mutagenesis and phenotypic characterization of bacteria, RNA-seq, bioinformatics analyses and animal infection models.

Admission requirements

  • Applicants must hold or anticipate receiving within the next months a University degree equivalent to a European University Master degree in the field of biomedicine, molecular biology, biochemistry or tumor biology (240 ECTS credits) of which 60 should be on an advanced level (Master level).
  • The position requires a minimum of 30 credits in chemistry with at least 7.5 credits in Biochemistry, 45 ECTS credits in the major areas of biology or molecular biology with at least 7.5 in genetics and 22.5 in microbiology, physiology or cell and molecular biology. In addition, it is required that at least 45 ETCS credits are at advanced level in cell and molecular biology, including independent work of at least 15.
  • Qualified are also those who completed eight semesters of medical or dental program, including medical chemistry, cell and molecular biology, genetics, physiology, microbiology and independent work and those that have acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in Sweden or abroad.
Applicants need to be skilled in both oral and written communication in English, be able to work independently as well as in collaboration with others and be highly motivated. Applicants should have a true interest in the field of molecular infection biology and be willing to take on a scientific and technical challenge. Prior hands-on experience in molecular biology, microbiology and bioinformatics is highly desirable and experience from previous experimental work with bacterial pathogens is considered a particular merit. Practical experiences from work with bioinformatic analyses of gene expression and handling of mice are merits.

Application

  • The assessments of the applicants are based on their qualifications and their ability to benefit from the doctoral-level education they will receive.
  • The application should include an introductory letter with a statement of research interest why you are interested in the position, CV and copies of degree certificates including documentation of completed academic courses and their grades, contact information to two persons willing to act as references and copies of thesis work and publications.
