We are looking for

An emerging area of common interest to the five 'Food Chairs' constituting the Food Science cluster of Wageningen University is to develop a system approach within the food science domain in relation to the overarching agri-food challenges. These challenges can be addressed by a system approach, including its dynamics. Areas of particular interest are Food Digestion Dynamics and Food Production Dynamics. The former envisages the understanding of food and its digestion as one system. The latter is on understanding the food and its production chain as one system.

Student life at Wageningen University

The specific work in the PhD project will concern the building of a systems dynamics approach for food safety microbiology by linking quantitative risk assessments with omics data. Phenotypic behaviour including adaptive stress response and survival, transfer and growth of pathogenic organisms in foods are coupled with transcriptome and genome data. Impact of food-relevant stresses on phenotypic diversification and convergent evolution will be assessed for selected foodborne pathogens.
  • Food Safety System Dynamics aims to address the fate of food microorganisms as they move throughout the food chain, explicitly including interdependencies and feedback loops down to a molecular level, unravelling the interdependencies between different stages in the food chain and on different levels of scale. It specifically studies quantitatively the fate of these organisms, and on the other side tries to understand the mechanisms of the overarching behaviour.

We ask

For this position we request a prospective PhD student, who has an MSc-degree or equivalent in (food) microbiology, biotechnology, Bioinformatics or in food science & technology and a genuine interest in quantitative microbiology and statistics. The project requires a dedicated, creative individual, with broad academic skills. The project will start as soon as possible.
