The Department of Drug Design and Pharmacology, Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen is pleased to announce that a PhD fellowship in Bioinformatics / Chemoinformatics is available from November 1st 2014 or as soon as possible thereafter. The application deadline is September 1st 2014.
The PhD project is within the field of computational design of compound libraries intended to identify physiological peptide ligands and small-molecule tool compounds for receptors with unknown physiological function. These are G protein-coupled receptors, which form one of the largest human protein families and mediate the effect of 27% of current drugs. The project will give novel insights into the functions of new human receptors, identify new drug targets and provide routes to new therapies.

Required qualifications

A Master´s degree in a relevant subject area prior to the starting date. This has to involve computational training, e.g. in bioinformatics, computer sciences or pharmaceutical sciences with a computational profile. Applicants with a pure medicinal chemistry or pharmaceutical sciences background will not be considered.

  • Ability to communicate well in English – both written and spoken
  • Programming experience in Python, PHP or similar language

Preferred qualifications

Experience in:

  1. Analysis of large sets of chemical ligand structures
  2. G protein-coupled receptor modeling
  3. Databases like MySQL, PostgreSQL or similar
  4. Writing of research articles
  5. Working in intradisciplinary teams

General job description

Your key tasks as a PhD fellow at the Faculty are to:

  1. manage and carry through your research project
  2. take PhD courses
  3. write scientific papers and your PhD thesis
  4. participate in national and international congresses and scientific meetings
  5. teach and co-supervise undergraduate students in pharmaceutical sciences
  6. stay at an external research institution

Key criteria for the assessment of applicants

  1. Professional qualifications relevant to the PhD programme
  2. Relevant work experience
  3. Publications
  4. The grade point average achieved
  5. Other professional activities
  6. Language skills
  7. Good interpersonal skills

Formal requirements

The position is available for a three-year period for applicants holding a relevant master´s degree.

It is a prerequisite that the PhD candidates are enrolled as PhD students at the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences according to the rules stipulated in the Ministerial order on the PhD programme at the universities (PhD order) from the Ministry of Science, Innovation, and Higher Education and the guidelines for the PhD programme at the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences. The PhD fellow is also expected to be affiliated with the graduate programme in pharmaceutical sciences, Drug Research Academy.

  • Salary and other terms of employment are stated in the Protocol on PhD Research Fellows signed by the Danish Ministry of Finance and AC (the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations).
