HLI will develop the largest human genome sequencing center in the world. The sequencing capacity will require the use of very efficient workflows for processing the sequencing data, including assembly, variant calling, genome phasing, and quality control. This position will be occupied by an individual capable of implementing and overseeing workflows for identifying variants and ensuring the generated data is of remarkable quality. It is expected that this individual will work with a team of laboratory scientists and technicians to create efficiencies in human DNA sequencing as well as work with software engineers and bioinformaticians to develop, implement, troubleshoot, interpret and novel DNA sequence bioinformatics algorithms.
Co-founder of HLI:
RESPONSIBILITIES
Implement and oversee appropriate human DNA sequencing computational methodologies, such as for alignment, variant calling, quality control, and phasing in a production setting
Troubleshoot sequencing runs that are flagged by HLI’s rigorous quality control system
Work with a team of researchers and software engineers to extend and interpret human DNA sequencing computational methodologies
Facilitate interactions with collaborators, both internal and external, to develop efficiencies for DNA sequence assembly and variant calling
Additional duties
Create documentation for methodologies
Write reports describing the results of the data analyses
Participate in presentations involving the data analyses
A Masters in Bioinformatics, Genetics, Computer Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Biostatistics or a related quantitative field
1+ years’ experience working in an environment (academic or commercial) in which the candidate’s data analysis skills contributed to a large collaborative genetic study
Experience writing computer programs for large data analyses in computer languages such as C/C++, C#, Python, Java, and/or R
Experience in human DNA sequence bioinformatics and computational biology, workflow implementation and sequencing applications in an academic lab or a commercial setting
Documented publication record describing human DNA sequencing methodology workflow applications to actual data analyses
Working with Ion Torrent, 454, Illumina’s HiSeq or other sequencing platforms
Familiarity with existing sequencing quality control software, such as FastQC and Picard
Proficiency running large human DNA sequencing computational tools for alignment and variant calling
Comfortable in both Linux and Windows environments
Established track record applying innovative methods to drive project success
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Ph.D in Bioinformatics, Genetics, Computer Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Biostatistics or a related quantitative field
