Position details:

The Bioinformatics Database Analyst, under minimal supervision, participates and leads in evaluating, planning, designing, coding, validating, implementing, and documenting database developments that support genomic research of the Department of Computational Biology. Works with a team to develop and enhance the Computational Biology Department's data management system. Performs database programming to support individuals within and outside of the department. Consults with application developers such as graphical user interface designers to aid in the development and implementation of new features. Performs quality control and importing of large datasets, automates current and future processes, and adds additional functionality to the Computational Biology databases. Imports and installs external databases. Develops analyses using the databases to make novel findings.

Job Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, bioinformatics, or related field is required.
  • Master's degree is preferred.
    EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
  • A minimum of eight (8) years of experience in database development and programming is required.
    OR
  • A minimum of four (4) years of experience with a master's degree.

SPECIAL SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

  • In-depth experience with relational databases, such as PostgreSQL or Oracle.
  • Strong relational database design skill.
  • Ability to write complex SQL and pl/Psql (or pl/sql) as well as SQL statement tuning.
  • Programming in Perl and Perl DBI.  Java and JDBC a plus.
  • Experience with command-line RDBMS clients, Subversion, and Linux
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills
  • Ability to collaborate with scientists on a variety of on-going projects.
  • Excellent communication and technical writing skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as a team member.
  • Biological background/experience a strong plus, especially in next-generation sequencing and microarray data.
  • The following are not required, but would be a plus: PostgreSQL database administration, NoSQL databases,PHP, Javascript, AJAX, or R.
