Two SickKids-led research teams awarded Bioinformatics and Computational Biology grants

About Sickkids

Two teams of researchers led by SickKids Research Institute scientists have been awarded research grants as recipients of the Genome Canada Bioinformatics and Computational Biology competition.

Dr. Michael Brudno, adjunct scientist in the Genetics & Genome Biology programand Scientific Director of the Centre for Computational Medicine, and his team have been awarded $998,546 over the next three years. With this funding they aim to develop a software that will identify patients with genetic variants requiring medical attention. This software will be crucial in early detection and treatment of illness by searching for a patient’s risk of developing an illness using their entire genome sequence.

Dr. John Parkinson, Senior Scientist in the Molecular Structure & Function program, and his team have been awarded $249,951 over the next two years to fund the development of a software that will identify the genes and pathways involved in certain microbiomes – bacteria communities that can have significant impact on human health. This will help identify which specific genes and pathways to target for treatment, reducing the risk of developing illnesses such as Type 1 diabetes, irritable bowel disease and rheumatoid arthritis.

Their work was funded by the Government of Canada through Genome Canada and the Ontario Genomics Institute (OGI-068).
