The Role

The University wishes to consolidate its investment in Genomics and Bioinformatics at the University of Kent by appointing a further academic at the Reader level. The appointment will reflect a candidate that consolidates and/or complements the strengths of the School of Biosciences and the Centre for Molecular Processing.

The appointee will be expected to be research active, having published in high impact journals and demonstrated grant income success, where their research interests also address the strategic research areas of research councils e.g. the BBSRC and align with that of other research funding agencies (e.g. European Union, charities).

The appointee will be expected to contribute to postgraduate teaching in particular.

The Person

The successful candidate will have a PhD in relevant area, and is expected to demonstrate an international research profile in the field with cross-disciplinary research interests. You will have a publication record in the leading peer-reviewed journals in the field, and have sufficient high impact publications to enhance the Biosciences REF submission.

 

You will demonstrate sustained success in winning competitive research grants, and have experience of collaboration with researchers from different disciplines.

You will also have demonstrable teaching experience.

The Department

The School of Biosciences is set in a beautiful campus overlooking the ancient city of Canterbury. Students, postgraduates and staff choose Biosciences at Kent for at least four reasons:

The School of Biosciences opened in 1970 and was founded on the principle that considerable benefits are to be gained through exploiting multidisciplinary approaches to biological research and enterprise activities. The School, which is consistently ranked among the most active biological science Schools in the UK, houses a dynamic research community made up of 8 research groups each with a strong national (and in many cases international) reputation for their research. This environment also provides an excellent setting for our postgraduate training programmes at the PhD and MSc level. We typically have a cohort of 80+ postgraduate (MSc + PhD) students and take approximately 10 new PhD students a year. The latter are supported largely by the BBSRC, the University and overseas agencies. The majority of our PhD programmes are four year although we do accommodate three year studentships in response to individual funding arrangements.
