Are you experienced in programming (Java, Perl), database development and administration, as well as bioinformatic tools and resources, in particular software development, testing, introduction, maintenance and support? Do you have a relevant qualification or experience in bioinformatics and good knowledge of molecular biology and human clinical genetics? Then this fixed term contract could be your ideal next move.

Once a niche interest area, Clinical Bioinformatics will soon influence every branch of medicine. We’re therefore facing the opportunity to become one of the few sought after national centres of expertise in bioinformatics training and support. Join us, and you could be pivotal in helping us realise this vision.

This role will be divided between Nowgen - a centre of excellence in public engagement, education and professional training in biomedicine - and NGRL Manchester, both part of the Manchester Biomedical Research Centre in the Research and Innovation Division of the Trust. Nowgen is also part of the Faculty of Medical and Human Sciences at The University of Manchester (UoM). Nowgen and NGRL are both affiliated to the Manchester Centre for Genetic Medicine, which includes one of the largest and most comprehensive clinical genetics services in Europe. The post is situated on the Trust site at the interface with the UoM, just two miles from the heart of Manchester.

It’s an exciting new role in a new initiative that will harness strong expertise in Genetic Medicine from within Central Manchester University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and UoM. It also offers an unrivalled opportunity to influence the response of Nowgen/NGRL to the national agenda for Clinical Bioinformatics training and resources for the NHS. Indeed, you’ll have the chance to steer the direction of NGRL/Nowgen’s programme to address the requirements of our stakeholders in the NHS and also to address the vision of the Government's Life Science Strategy. As well as working closely with key stakeholders to provide solutions by harnessing the potential of clinical bioinformatics to ensure better patient outcomes, you’ll liaise with the Department of Health and the Modernising Scientific Careers Programme. Why? To ensure the current and future workforce are prepared for the new era of genetic medicine that will harness the potential of personalised medicine through genome sequencing. What’s more, you’ll have a 20 person state-of-the-art bioinformatics training suite at your disposal in which to deliver the training. The perfect home for your bioinformatics expertise, you’ll be critical to ensuring that our colleagues have the appropriate resources and skills to enable them to harness and utilise data for patient benefit. All the while, you’ll be developing your skills in an arena where demand for expertise will increase hugely over the next few years.

As you’ll be teaching others, experience of training, teaching or lecturing is crucial, as are good communication and project management skills. You’ll also need to think creatively to come up with innovative solutions to developing resources and training programmes that address the requirements of a diverse set of stakeholders in and beyond the NHS. In short, your expertise will ensure the timely deliver of resources and training programmes in the context of the strategy of the Manchester Centre for Genetic Medicine.
